The debug window shows 'Array[0]=>4242342344338539ee80348394749' instead of just plain old 4242342344338539ee80348394749 for my variable. The wiki specifically says it returns one value.

I just tried PMFGetGroupUID() in PM 3.2.1 and it returns a string containing the unique ID of the group. I also checked the source code and it returns a string.
Are you sure that you aren't confusing it with another function?
You also need to be careful with the debugger because the bottom pane often doesn't refresh, so you need to click on the variable in the upper pane that contains the list of variables to get the bottom pane to refresh and show the current value.

I'm using 3.0.1.8 community edition. I did click on the upper variable and it still shows as an array. I copied and pasted my code, so not confusing it with something else I don't think?

I don't see how it can be an array, but use this trigger code to check:

This will print the structure on the screen.

If it is truly an array, then use this code:
@@group = @=groupUID[0];
