I just tried PMFGetGroupUID() in PM 3.2.1 and it returns a string containing the unique ID of the group. I also checked the source code and it returns a string.
Are you sure that you aren't confusing it with another function?
You also need to be careful with the debugger because the bottom pane often doesn't refresh, so you need to click on the variable in the upper pane that contains the list of variables to get the bottom pane to refresh and show the current value.

Looking at the code, I don't understand how it is returning an array, but it is.

OK, use this code:
Code: Select all
@=groupUID = PMFGetGroupUID(@@group_name);
if (is_array(@=groupUID)) {
   if (count(@=groupUID) == 0) {
      @=groupUID = '';
   }
   else {
      @=groupUID = @=groupUID[0];
   }
}
