Mythconceptions A sore point Dr Karl S. Kruszelnicki tackles life's myths, curiosities and absurdities. Pain is a very necessary sensation - after all, if you didn't have pain to warn you that you had torn a ligament, touched something hot or stepped on a thorn, you might ignore the injury and let it progress to a much worse stage. In Western society, it's generally thought that women feel pain less than men. Scientists who specialise in pain, however, claim the opposite. They say that compared with men, women report suffering more pain during their lives, experience it in more parts of the body and find that each episode lasts longer.

Dictionaries define pain as physical discomfort caused by illness or injury. The word's Old English root means some kind of punishment inflicted for being bad, and it came from the Old French peine, which in turn came from the Latin poena, which gave us the word "penalty". So there is, in the roots of the word itself, a link between pain and penalty, implying that pain is the punishment for wrong actions. The big question is why men and women have such huge differences in pain response. Certainly, fundamental biological factors, such as genetics and hormones, play their part. Dr Linda LeResche from the University of Washington has been researching pain since 1983.

She quotes one study of boys and girls entering puberty that found the girls reported increases in different types of pain, such as stomach aches, headaches, and back and facial pain. She quotes another study that found women felt pain more often, and to a greater degree, when their oestrogen levels were low. Other studies tend to show that women get better pain relief from opiate-based painkillers (such as codeine) than men do. But social and psychological factors also play their part. For example, men and women use different strategies to cope with pain; however, the women's strategy seems to be less effective in the long term.
In general, men tend to concentrate on the actual physical sensations that the pain causes. This increases the level of discomfort at which they experience pain and therefore their tolerance of pain. Women tend to focus on the emotional aspects of the pain. Unfortunately, the emotions usually associated with pain are negative, and this can cause the women to experience more pain. This might be why pain-management strategies show gender differences as well. These strategies use multi-pronged approaches, such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological treatments. Men and women feel equal reductions in pain intensity immediately after the program. But after three months, while men still stay at this reduced level, women are back to their pre-program levels of pain. Scientists are still exploring pain.

Indeed, some of the nerves that carry pain were discovered only a few years ago. And there are some types of pain that modern medicine cannot treat well. Solution, page 70 -- Compiled by Bob Pickering Your time starts now Rachel Berger Comedian My earliest memory is... of the hideous bobbing mobile over my pram and the succession of charmless adults making fish faces at me like the cast of a nightmarish vaudeville show. At school I... had an imaginary friend who stayed out late, didn't wear knickers and kissed all the boys. Now I have real friends like this. My first relationship... was with food. I'm a food slut: I eat around. I don't like talking about... federal politics. It makes me feel like I've been on a really crap date. My drink of choice is... anything that comes in a spill-proof drink cup.
My mother always told me... when eating with your fingers, don't touch other people. I wish I had... Wonder Woman's invisible plane and bulletproof bracelets. I wish I hadn't... said, "These mushrooms are perfectly safe." My most humiliating moment... was talking to my brother on his mobile phone and telling him that I thought I had hemorrhoids, only to find out that he was in his car with the phone on speaker driving four workmates to a meeting. My happiest moment... is seeing the "Sold out" sign across the box-office window. At home I cook... anything that says "Heat and serve" on the side of the packet. My favourite gadget is... a toy cat that lies in the car's rear window; its eyes light up when you brake. The book that changed my life is... the manual for my alarm clock radio.

I'm loving... not being woken by the alarm at 3am. Friends say I am... obsessive. What do they mean? What do they mean? If only I could... tell my oral hygienist he's got hideous bad breath. The last big belly laugh I had... was when a drunk woman in the audience started answering rhetorical questions I posed on stage. I'm always being asked... if Rachel Berger is my real name. My favourite game is... telling people that my real name is Feodora Weisswurst.

If I were a car I'd be... an E-type Jaguar; they're over 40 years old and always in perfect condition. I often wonder... if I could suck the venom out of snakebite. I'm told the bitter taste can be masked if you fill your mouth with apple schnapps before applying your lips to the fang marks. Rachel Berger's new show, Clenched Buttocks, runs until September 24 at the Carlton Courthouse.
